OBITUARY

Professor Yoginder K. Alagh (1939-2022)
The Indian Society of Agricultural Economics is extremely sad to inform you about the demise of Professor Yoginder K. Alagh, on December 6, 2022 at the age of 83. Professor Alaghwas a renowned Indian economist and former Union Minister of Government of India, Member Planning Commission, Chairman, Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, Chairman, Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices, . He was the Chairman of Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) from 2006 to 2012. He was the Chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. He has taught Economics at the University of Rajasthan, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, University of Jodhpur, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. He has acted as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Also founding member of Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology(CEPT), Ahmedabad presently one of India’s pioneered Planning and Public policy institute. Dr.Alagh was a visionary leader and fostered, developed and administered means of providing direct professional input into the policy process. He steered the Power, Science and Technology and Planning, Programme Implementation Ministries from 1996 to 1998. With determination and persistence, he has been the singular driving force in developing agro-climatic zonal planning in India. His contribution to the profession extends beyond academic domain to include committee appointments, review panels and service as institution builder. He was our Society’s Conference President during the year 2017 and the first recipient of Fellow of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics in 2011 at University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. He contributed a great deal in the all-round development of the Society.The grief of Professor Alagh’s loss is shared by his professional colleagues, office bearers of the Societyand the entire academic fraternity.
